PROVIDENCE, RI (WHDH) -- Amid a sea of flags a soldier made his final journey home and received a hero’s farewell.

At the memorial for Sergeant Dennis Weichel his actions and sacrifice were honored.

Weichel donned a Superman tattoo on his arm and lived up to the values of his fictional hero.

The Rhode Island National guard now says it was a young boy who Weichel pulled to safety from underneath a military vehicle when he was killed in Afghanistan.

Weichel was remembered not only for his honor and bravery but for his friendship. He was remembered as a caring man who always brought laughter to those who knew him.

In death, Weichel was awarded the Bronze Star, the nation’s fourth highest award for bravery.

He is survived by his fiancée, three children and his parents.
