PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence police officer who died Thursday after his cruiser crashed was among three officers who talked a man off a bridge on Wednesday.
A police report shows 41-year-old Maxwell Dorley talked to the 19-year-old man, who told a 911 operator he wanted to kill himself and had nothing to live for.
Dorley, a 15-year-veteran, died at Rhode Island Hospital after his cruiser crashed while he was responding to a request for backup at a report of a disturbance.
Police say Dorley lost control of the cruiser and slammed into a utility pole behind Providence College's Schneider Arena.
The utility pole ended up on top of the cruiser, which landed on a concrete wall. Police say one witness told investigators Dorley was trying to move out of the way of another vehicle.
