EASTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A burglary suspect tried to escape arrest by hiding in a storm drain, police said.

“Police had seen him go into the pipe. But they were concerned -- they didn’t know if he was armed. They had some dogs but they didn’t send the dogs because the dogs could have got disoriented and not be able to turn around,” said James Conceison, Easton DPW.

Conceison was called to help police figure out how they were going to catch the burglary suspect.

“They had us go down and open up the manhole covers to see if the guy was in there. He had actually crawled in probably couple hundred feet,” Conceison said.

Christopher Azevedo, 27, was wanted for breaking into a home in a nearby condo complex, where police say jewelry, computers, and a television were stolen. Police say when they went to Azevedo’s home to make an arrest, he took off on them.

Conceison said they dropped a ladder into one of the manholes.

“As soon as the ladder hit the bottom of the manhole, we heard a voice coming out of the bottom telling us that he was coming out and that he was sorry,” Conceison said.

The suspect is in custody and was arraigned on Friday.
