High tide creates nuisance for South Shore drivers

SCITUATE, Mass. (WHDH) -- Astronomical high tides were big concern on the South Shore overnight, and though flooding turned out to be minor it was certainly a nuisance for drivers in the area.

Emergency crews say they don't anticipate that any evacuations will be necessary but they have preparations in place - to get people moving out of the area just in case.

Cars were submerged in water as waves splashed onto roads and seeped through the sea wall. There were also reports of storm surges as high tide approached around midnight.

Town officials say they don't anticipate any damage to houses.

"If you get a concept of it, the floats are actually above the break wall, the sea wall there,” boat owner Stanley Glaskin said. “So what you're seeing is the bottom of the floats actually at the water level so the water is just free-flowing right up over into the harbor."

"Everything gets stacked up here in the harbor so it's the docks, the boats, everything's taking a pretty good beating here," Domenic Mazzocco said.

Meanwhile, wind was also a concern, with 30-to-35 mile-per-hour gusts being reported. In neighboring Marshfield, strong winds caused trees to fall on power lines resulting in outages for residents.

By Tuesday morning it appeared the worst of the flooding had passed. Appears the national weather service issued a coastal flood warning for the area which went into effect at 9 p.m. Monday and ended at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
