Brockton man accused of attack with sausage links

BROCKTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Brockton man is accused of attacking someone using stolen sausage links and a wrench.

On Monday morning, Michael Baker appeared before a judge Brockton District Court.

Police said what started with some stolen food quickly turned very violent when the suspect used that food as a weapon and pulled out a wrench. A fairground favorite becomes a weapon in a dangerous assault. Brockton police said Baker stole sausages, cheese and hot dogs and then assaulted a stranger with the food and a wrench.

“He stated that the white male hit him with a wrench over his head. He also noticed a ten-gallon trash barrel about 20 feet away from the complainant where he sad on west street. This barrel was full of frozen sausage, bread, a block of cut cheese and case of hot dogs.”

The victim was riding a bicycle near the fairgrounds Sunday morning. He said he'd never seen the suspect before and the attack was unprovoked. Police say an off-duty nurse found the victim on the ground bleeding. He was brought to the hospital.

Police said baker stole the bike and jewelry. When they arrested him a short time later, they found a silver wrench in his pocket and red stains on his clothing and on his hands.

Baker entered a not guilty plea in court. He told the judge he didn't know anything about the food and he told the judge he only pulled out the wrench to defend himself because he said the victim first pulled out a knife. He was ordered held on $1,000 bail.
