MERRIMAC, Mass. (WHDH) -- A family from Maine, returning home from vacation in Massachusetts, became the targets of gunfire on Route 495 in Merrimac on Sunday. Their 16-year-old daughter was struck in the arm.

The 16-year-old girl was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport within minutes of the shooting. State police say her injuries were not life-threatening.

The family says a passenger, in a white Honda Accord with tinted windows, fired at their SUV in a fit of road rage. They say a woman was driving the Accord northbound on 495 and that the pair drove off after the shooting.

The incident happened shortly after noon Sunday, and state police say there was heavy traffic on Route 495 at the time. Officers are asking for any witnesses of the incident to come forward and provide additional information.
