DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- A historic roller coaster was demolished in Dartmouth on Wednesday.
"The Comet" at Lincoln Park opened more than 70 years ago, but Wednesday the ride came crashing down.
For years "The Comet" was the premier ride at Dartmouth’s Lincoln Park but Wednesday it was a spectacle for a different reason.
Demolition crews began work to tear the ride down. The ride opened in 1946. It was popular for 41 years before Lincoln Park closed in 1987.
Since then, there were attempts to save the park, but they fell through. Locals are sad to see the signature coaster go.
“I met my wife here. And we had a summer home in Westport and I used to come here at night. This was before I met my wife. It holds a special place in my heart,” said one man.
Once the demolition is done, the property will be turned into a mixed use commercial and residential complex.
