Middletown beach closed to swimming

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island health officials have recommended the closure to swimming of the Atlantic Beach Club beach in Middletown.

Officials at the health department say water testing there revealed high bacteria counts.

The health department will reopen the beach to swimming when bacteria counts return to safe levels.

The state regularly tests the water at public beaches during the summer season to make sure that it's safe for swimming.

Water analysis is done by the health department or a laboratory certified by the state.
