Conn. police step up patrols after Colo. shooting

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut state police are stepping up patrols at theaters and other public venues where lots of people gather after the mass shooting at a movie theater in Colorado.

A graduate student in a gas mask barged into a Denver-area cinema during a showing of the new Batman movie Friday and opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Friday state police are stepping up checks of high population venues.

New Haven police are stepping up patrols around a theater showing the new Batman movie.

Authorities say they have not received any threats.

The suspect in the Colorado shooting was taken into custody near a car behind the theater and was identified by federal law enforcement officials as 24-year-old James Holmes.
