STOUGHTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- A 3-year-old girl was struck and killed by a box truck in Stoughton on Friday afternoon.
Witnesses are shocked and saddened by what they saw.
“The mother was crossing the street with the stroller with the baby and she had a three-year-old next to her and all the traffic was stopped coming the opposite way for them to cross and then when they were going the 3-year-old ran in front a little bit and this Angelo’s box truck was going down the opposite way as everyone else was stopped, he kept going and hit the little girl,” said a witness.
Izaiah Roberts watched the collision happen outside Hansen Elementary School and then shot the scene on his cell phone.
“I think [the mother] got on her knees and prayed. She ran out in the street and the guy was going over the speed limit probably and he just hit her. And I don’t know -- I looked away,” Roberts said.
Investigators said the accident did not take place near a crosswalk. They also said the driver of the truck did stop. Witnesses say he was seen rolling on the ground after striking the child.
One mother who was picking up her son saw the child get struck and called 911.
“I said, ‘there’s a girl that was hit,’ I saw the truck right there and I saw a guy laying on the grass. That was the guy that was screaming, ‘oh my God, oh my God, what happened?’” the woman said.
The driver was interviewed by police but according to investigators, there is no evidence that he was speeding or of him being impaired -- so no charges are being filed.
“It’s horrific because all these children, this is a big school. There are a lot of children that come here and a lot of parents that try to come and pick up their children. The children try to get to the cars and try to cross the street. It’s nonstop, they never stop on the street,” said a witness.
People dropped off flowers at the spot where the 3-year-old died Friday night.
