Off-duty officer struck by SUV in Quincy

QUINCY, Mass. (WHDH) -- An off-duty transit officer was struck by a car in Quincy Thursday afternoon.

Police say an off-duty transit officer was riding a motorcycle when it collided with a Jeep. The driver of the Jeep says the accident was unavoidable.

“I stopped, looked, no cars, no nothing. And I tried to turn -- halfway through I hear this…the motorcycle comes,” said Laizang Zhang.

Police say the driver was trying to turn left into an apartment complex and the motorcyclist slammed right into the side of the SUV.

“The young kid was laying face-first, still had his helmet on, he was bleeding out his nose and his mouth and wasn’t talking at all. Definitely unconscious,” said Patrice Sullivan, a witness.

Patrice Sullivan is a registered nurse and drove past the scene moments after impact.

“I’ve seen a bunch of stuff and I’ve seen a lot of trauma but to actually come upon the scene was kind of scary,” said Sullivan.

The 26-year-old officer was taken to Boston Medical Center. He’s in stable condition.

The driver says his son, who was in the car at the time, was also injured.

“Where his car seat is is by the impact of the door so we want to get him checked out,” said Zhang.

The child is expected to be okay. Officers say the driver should've yielded.

“Because of that, we are charging him with failure to yield to oncoming traffic,” an officer said.
