MIDDLEBORO, Mass. (WHDH) -- Fire crews battled flames at a vacant building off Route-28, early Tuesday morning.

The building was in an abandoned motel, the Alpine Motel, on Wareham Street in Middleboro.

Middleboro Fire Chief said crews responded to a fire at the abandoned Alpine Motel three weeks ago. "X's" on the building let crews know not to go in.

Firefighters immediately they went to the defensive mode.

There were problems initially laying all the hose lines to get water on that fire. The flames were intense early on but the firefighters were able to get the fire under control.

Firefighters managed to knock down the fire around 6:30 in the morning, with some residual flare-ups. The building was located in a commercial area with no houses nearby, so no other buildings were in danger of being affected by the fire.

Parts of Wareham Street were shut down Tuesday morning. Firefighters remained on scene.

They have not said what started the fire.
