FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WHDH) -- Hurricane Sandy ripped off part of a metal roof from a Pizza Hut in Fairhaven on Monday.
Meteorologists said winds were sustained at 37 miles per hour and gusts reached 55 miles per hour. Every time a gust of wind blew through the area part of the roof peeled off. An employee said the roof started blowing off around 3 p.m. and they promptly closed the restaurant.
In Dartmouth, Mass. earlier in the day families were evacuated from low-lying areas. About 1,000 people in a 20-mile radius near the water received a mandatory evacuation.
Some people, despite the warning from city officials, decided to stick it out, and waited to see how high the water goes before they decide to leave.
