PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- Notorious mobster, James “Whitey” Bulger, was taken to the hospital just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning by an ambulance stationed at Plymouth Fire Headquarters.

Bulger was transported from the Plymouth House of Corrections where he's being held while awaiting trial.

The 83-year-old was complaining of chest pains, according to a source. However 7News was told his condition is not life threatening.

Bulger was indicted in 1994 in connection with 19 murders was on the lam with his longtime girlfriend Catherine Gregg for 16 years before they were captured in California last year.

The 61-year-old Gregg was sentenced back in June to 8 years in prison.

Bulger’s attorney, J.W. Carney, was back in federal court just last week trying to convince a judge to postpone the start of his trial from March 2013 to November 2013.

Prosecutors accuse Bulger of continually trying to delay the case. Bulger’s attorney said there’s just too much information they need to review and can’t possibly be ready by the spring. He maintains Bulger plans to testify at his trial.

It is uncertain if Bulger’s hospitalization will now play in the judge’s decision on whether or not to grant that delay.
