House fire kills 10-month-old infant in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- An overnight fire has killed a 10-month-old girl in Providence.
Acting Fire Chief Clarence Cunha says the girl's mother screamed to firefighters that the infant was still inside the Bowdoin Street home after everyone else fled the triple-decker building early Saturday.
Firefighters found the child four minutes later and removed her from the home, but she was already dead. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Cunha says there were no smoke detectors in the home. State and city investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
One firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries. No other resident was hurt in the blaze that left ten adults and seven children without a home.
Firefighters arrived at the two-family home shortly after 3 a.m.
