WETHERSFIELD, Conn. -- Flames broke out on a Peter Pan bus traveling from New York to Boston on Friday.

The fire started in the rear of the bus around 3:30 p.m., according to Connecticut State Police.

The driver was able to pull to the side of the road and get all of the passengers off before the bus became fully engulfed in flames.

"We heard an explosion between Vernon and Rocky Hill. We continued to drive and...pulled over. We were told to all get off the bus...Everybody got off the bus safely and about three minutes later the bus caught on fire," a passenger told 7NEWS.

The fire forced police to temporarily close down southbound lanes of I-91.

Everyone got off the bus safely.

The bus was removed from the highway and it is back open.
