7-year-old still in class after pencil stabbing
SPENCER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Parents of students at Wire Village School are outraged after learning a 7-year-old student is still in class after being accused of assaulting another 7-year-old boy so seriously, the victim had to undergo emergency surgery.
7News was told that the victim, a second-grader, had to undergo emergency surgery. He lost quite a bit of blood and has to wear a colostomy bag.
"My child is in the same class as the perpetrator, and has had issues with the perpetrator on other occasions, and I’m very concerned about the safety of my son,” said Lynda Hafner, a concerned parent.
Police said it took place during recess on October 4th but were not saying much else due to the sensitivity of what took place.
"Another boy took a pencil and stabbed him through his pants and his underwear,” said Hafner.
Parents want to know why it took so long for the school to notify them and why the student allegedly responsible is still in class.
“We found out through Facebook. It was a shock to us. It wasn't from the school. It was just through Facebook. Not the way I like to find things out,” said Travis Riley, a parent.
The principal and superintendent sent a letter home to parents Friday, October 25, telling them there was an incident; “though at this time we have no conclusive evidence to make a judgment, we continue to pursue an active investigation...and the safety of all our students is of utmost importance."
Kimberly Comeau considered home schooling her daughter after hearing what happened.
“If the kid got assaulted at recess, somebody's not doing their job, and I certainly don't want my daughter to be the next victim,” said Comeau.
“I think he's disturbed. This is not normal behavior for a 7-year-old child,” said Hafner.
7News spoke with the victim’s mother. She said her son is doing okay but will have to undergo a second surgery. In the meantime, the school, the police in Spencer as well as the District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Children and Families are all investigating the incident.
