FITCHBURG, Mass. (WHDH) -- A mother and son were killed and another person was injured after a two-car collision in Fitchburg Sunday morning, according to the Worcester County district attorney's office.

The fatal crash occurred at 10:30 a.m. near 1191 Ashby Street on Route 31. A 36-year-old mother and her 16-year-old son were killed when they were ejected from their SUV.

The man who was injured was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive, according to the district attorney.

The mother and son’s SUV crossed over a marked lane and struck the other vehicle, according to the district attorney. Investigators say it wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the wheel.

“It was a corner and just a very freak accident at a bad time,” said Deputy Chief John Curran, Fitchburg Fire Department.

“There was a car in the snow bank and one that you could see on the road, but I couldn’t see anything else because they were very good at keeping me behind the snow bank,” said Marissa Fleming, who saw the aftermath of the crash.

7News has learned the mother was an EMT with Ashby Fire.

Sunday’s winter weather may have played a role in the crash.

“I will say, at that time it was flurrying out. The roads could have been a little slippery,” said Deputy Chief Curran.

Neighbors told 7News Route 31 is a dangerous road to drive on.
