Arrest made in attacks on teens in Worcester
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Police arrested an 18-year-old man Wednesday night in connection with several recent attacks on women in Worcester.
Charles Monroe, of Worcester, faces charges in three attacks that took place in the Vernon Hill neighborhood.
All three cases involved teenage girls, ages 15, 16 and 17, walking to school in the morning. Two of those girls were along Dorchester Street when they were attacked.
In each incident, the suspect approached the females, held a knife to their necks and tried to attack them.
In one case Oct. 20 and in another case on Monday, the girls were able to get away and report the incident. The victim in the second case suffered a cut and needed seven stitches on her finger from the suspect’s knife.
Wednesday morning, the suspect was able to take the third victim to an apartment building on Leon Street, where Worcester Police said she was sexually assaulted. She was not able to report the rape until she got to school.
Monroe will be arraigned in Worcester Court Thursday morning on multiple charges.
While Monroe waits to enter the courtroom, residents of the neighborhoods where the attacks were happening had no idea such incidents were occurring until the suspect was arrested Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s just off the wall,” said Kim Willett, a concerned resident. “That’s unbelievable. I mean all these kids walk to school, all these teenagers that walk down the street.”
While investigators were in district court taking out complaints to arrest the suspect, he was allegedly attacking his third victim.
“We noticed as each incident was occurring his level of violence was increasing,” said Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurtst of the Worcester Police Department. “We’re really concerned and really wanted to get this guy off the street before something really serious happens.”
Neighbors said they were surprised neither police nor school officials notified them after the first attack.
Monroe faces 13 charges including aggravated rape and kidnapping.
