Friends and family grieve over loss of Firefighter Davies

WORCESTER, Mass. – Friends and family mourned the loss of fallen Firefighter Jon Davies on Thursday.
It was a heart wrenching scene outside Firefighter Jon Davies’ townhouse on Thursday as Davies’ fiancee retrieved an armload of his possessions, including an American flag and two firefighter’s dress uniforms.
"He was the best man I've ever known," said Davies’ fiancee.
Neighbors agreed with those words.
"It's a tragedy. Like I said, I found out earlier this morning. It’s too bad. He was a nice man, you know. He did for everybody around here and stuff,” said Lisa Squire, a neighbor.
“He was a dedicated father, a good neighbor to everybody here, so you know, it’s a big loss. I mean, young, and he was a firefighter, and it’s tough. I mean, my heart goes out to his young son,” said Elaine Daviau, a neighbor.
Davies went back into the triple-decker because there were reports of a person unaccounted for.
7News talked to Davies’ sister and her fiancee who were at the hospital comforting the firefighter’s 13-year-old son.
Davies’ two older sons are both in military. 7News was told one is coming home from a tech school in Mississippi. The other son, who is in Afghanistan, has been told of his father’s death but it remains unclear if he will be able to return to Worcester.
At the townhouse, Davies’ fiancee was joined by apparent family members. At one point, she brought out a bronze plaque with a heroic firefighter’s figure on it.
"I would never have never expected it…Worcester doesn’t have a lot of nasty fires. It’s not a Boston or New York, so you think you’re a little safer, but I guess if you’re a firefighter it’s the chances you take," said Rick Adams, a neighbor.
A memorial fund has been set up for the children of Jon Davies. Contributions may be sent to:
