Trial set for Orthodox priest charged with assault

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The former pastor of a Greek Orthodox church in Worcester who is facing assault charges is scheduled to go to trial in May.
A judge set a May 1 trial date for the Very Rev. Charles M. Abdelahad on Tuesday.
Abdelahad, the former pastor of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, has pleaded not guilty to charges including indecent assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The indecent assault and battery charge was reduced from a charge of rape last year at the request of prosecutors. He is free on personal recognizance.
Abdelahad is accused of biting and kicking the alleged victim, pulling her hair, and striking her with a religious icon.
His lawyer tells the Telegram & Gazette he expects his client to be exonerated.
