MGM to gauge support for casino in Brimfield

BRIMFIELD, Mass. -- A major Las Vegas casino company says it wants to get a sense from Brimfield residents if they back a resort-style casino in town.
MGM Resorts International said Thursday it has filed a petition to have a non-binding casino question put on the May 21 town meeting warrant.
MGM announced a plan last month to purchase a 150-acre site in the community about 65 miles west of Boston. The proposed casino could be in competition with several other plans for the sole casino license in western Massachusetts under the state's new gaming law.
The company says the town meeting vote would be used to gauge support for a casino. If the proposal were to go forward, it would then require a binding vote in a town election.
