WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (WHDH) -- Westborough students suspected of using drugs could now face a tough test.

The school committee there has approved a new drug and alcohol policy. It will allow administrators to test the saliva of students who appear impaired during the school day and at functions like school dances and sporting events.

Their parents would be notified after the test is given.

"While alcohol use has stabilized, drug use has increased and so this is a way to make sure we use objective means if we think a student is acting unusually to be able to verify what the cause of the behavior is," Westborough School Committee Chair Ilyse Lavine-Canji said.

The school already has a breathalyzer in place to test students for alcohol use.
