Driver in fatal wrong way crash in Hadley indicted
HADLEY, Mass. (AP) -- A Sunderland woman police say was drunk when she drove the wrong way on Route 116 in Hadley and caused a crash that took the life of a UMass student has been indicted.
The Northwestern district attorney's office says 23-year-old Brittini Benton was indicted last week on charges including manslaughter by motor vehicle and drunken driving.
No arraignment date has been scheduled.
Prosecutors allege Benton was driving south in the northbound lanes of Route 116 at about 2:20 a.m. on April 14 near the UMass football stadium when she collided with a motorcycle operated by 24-year-old Daniel Haley of Pittsfield, then with another car. Haley, scheduled to graduate this spring, was pronounced dead at the scene. Benton and the driver of the other vehicle were also hurt.
