WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) -- The owner of a Grafton day care center charged with severely injuring a baby boy in her care has pleaded not guilty.

April Grandinetti was released on personal recognizance after her arraignment Tuesday in Worcester Superior Court on charges of assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury, and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Grandinetti flagged down a police officer outside her home day care on Jan. 13 with the child in her arms.

The baby was brought to the hospital where doctors determined his injuries were not accidental. The child was bleeding around his brain and eyes and had a detached retina.

Prosecutors say the child is out of the hospital.

Grandinetti's lawyer tells The Telegram & Gazette she expects her client to be vindicated.
