Young Springfield girl falls from 5th-floor window

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A 5-year-old girl who plunged to the ground from a fifth-floor window at a Springfield apartment building was taken to the hospital with multiple broken bones.

Authorities say the girl fell at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday from the apartment block on Girard Avenue.

A resident reported the fall to building security, who alerted authorities.

The girl was taken to Baystate Medical Center for treatment. Her name was not released and her condition was not immediately available.

The girl's grandmother told WWLP-TV that the child is autistic and the family was visiting friends on the fifth floor when she fell.

A 2-year-old girl died after falling from the third floor of a Fall River home last month.
