Woman drives car onto golf course, into sand trap

UXBRIDGE, Mass. -- A woman told police she drove her car into a sand trap on a Massachusetts golf course because her GPS sent her the wrong way.

Police say she was drunk.

Patricia Maione was held on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges including driving with a suspended license and fourth offense drunken driving.

Authorities say the 47-year-old woman's car got stuck at the Whitinsville Golf Club in Northbridge on Monday. She told police her GPS told her to turn left, which she said led her through a corn field and onto the golf course.

"When they got her out of the car, she indicated that her GPS unit told her to take a right at the cart path so she did. She indicated she was driving around a corn field for a little while. She thought she was in a corn field," said Lt. Timothy Labrie, Northbridge Police Department.

"One of the wheels was obviously in the air and kind of spinning, so she wasn't going to go anywhere," one man said. "She came towards the center of town and took a right heading into the golf course and up the cart path actually. She followed the cart path until the car runs out."

"We were just out here practicing on the putting green and next thing we know there's a car in the bunker. We look over one minute it's not there. Look back the next, it's there," said Matt Beauregard.

Police say they found a cup filled with alcohol in her car.

There were golfers on the course at the time, but no one was hurt.
