UMass selects Hartford deputy as campus chief
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- The University of Massachusetts has selected a veteran Hartford, Conn. officer as its new campus police chief.
The university announced Tuesday that Hartford assistant chief of police John Horvath will take over at the Amherst campus in September. He succeeds Johnny Whitehead, who served as chief from 2009 until February when he left for Rice University in Texas.
Horvath was chosen from a group of 88 applicants for the top job at the UMass Police Department.
Horvath said in a statement he pursued the job "because of the team approach at UMass Amherst and the sense of pride that is evident."
He joined the Hartford department in 1994 as a police recruit and served as an officer, sergeant and lieutenant.
