UMass-Amherst freshmen most accomplished
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- The nearly 4,600 freshmen enrolling at the University of Massachusetts' flagship Amherst campus this fall are the school's most academically accomplished ever.
University officials say the average SAT score of the Class of 2016 has increased by seven points over last year to 1,196, while the average grade point average has increased to 3.66 from 3.64. On average, students rank in the top fifth of their high school classes.
The freshman class was selected from a record 34,400 applicants, a 6 percent increase over the previous year and an increase of 9 percent in out-of-state applicants.
Twenty-one percent of the freshman class are minorities.
First-year Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy says the high number of applicants is due to "the value that UMass Amherst offers to students and their families."
