Teens arrested after fight at Worcester school

WORCESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Three teens and a mother were in court Tuesday after police officers were swarmed by students outside of a high school in Worcester.

Cell phone video captured the chaos outside of North High School that left a police officer with a broken leg.

“I can’t recall anything recently that was on this level that erupted so quickly over nothing,” said Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst of the Worcester police department.

Five teenagers, including two juveniles, and a mother of a 16-year-old girl were arrested after a fight broke out after school Monday. The fight followed a brawl last Friday that ended with three teenagers being arrested.

North High School senior Tee Green, who took the cell phone video, said the brawl was crazy.

“North High is getting out of control,” said Green.

Investigators said about 50 students surrounded two police officers and started chanting to them to free a 15 year old they were questioning. Suddenly punches started flying.

Police are not sure what sparked the fight on Friday and if Monday’s melee was connected to it, but they do hope students get the message with the added police presence that behavior like that won’t be tolerated.

“I hope that they can at the very least take a valuable lesson out of this and not think you can put a hand on a police officer and that’s okay,” said Hazelhurst.

Everyone who was arrested is due back in court in January. The students may be suspended from school, but that will be determined by the superintendent.
