Blind sled dog's brother becomes his seeing-eye dog
BRETTON WOODS, N.H. (WHDH) -- It sounds a bit odd, but a blind sled dog in New Hampshire is proving a little help...can go a long way.
His name is Gonzo. Three years ago he went blind - and his future as a sled dog was in limbo.
Treatments didn't work and surgery didn't restore his eyesight.
After a year, Gonzo was reintroduced into the running with the team and Gonzo's brother, Poncho, became his seeing-eye dog.
“Poncho might lean into him, nudge him, bark at him. They've developed a system of commands far beyond what we could teach. If they're back there it's kind of cute, Poncho will even give Gonzo a little nip on the side of the face like, 'hey bro, there's a hill coming up,'” said owner, Karent Tolin of Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel.
The dog mushers said as long as this dynamic duo wants to pull sleds -- they're not going to stop them.
