Man reels in 800-pound Mako shark

UNDATED (NBC) -- The San Diego fishing community is still talking about a few lucky fisherman's giant catch more than two weeks ago.

Four fishermen pulled in a Mako shark weighing more than 600 pounds onto the Oceanside Harbor July 29.

"When we first hooked it it jumped out of the water 20 feet before it landed again," Lance Magee said.

It was a 10 foot, 3 inch Mako shark and too big for the Oceanside man to reel in by himself.

"And when he got tired he handed it off to a young man named Justin Stilsen who did a excellent job and another gentleman took it, Darrell Priest, who also did an excellent job," said Magee's friend Mark Carpenter.

After a two hour battle, the four men landed the enormous Mako and Magee finally got the story he has always wanted to tell.

"That's one off the bucket list," he said. "But I'd like to try it again."

The weight was anyone's guess.

Scales at the harbor do not measure more than 600 pounds.

One of the men estimated that the shark likely weighed more than 700 pounds.

A picture of the fish is now on the Helgren Sportsfishing Hall of Fame and Magee was thankful to Oceanside bait shop for giving him what he called the right bait that day.

Just a few days prior to the catch during a Flying Mako Catch and Release tournament, a group of fishermen snagged a Mako shark - though video of the catch shows the shark was not nearly as large as the one caught four days later.
