FTC warns of scams through online dating sites

UNDATED (WHDH) -- The Federal Trade Commission has a warning for people looking for love online.

The agency saw a spike in thieves preying on people through online dating sites.

Officials said often times, the crooks put up a fake profile to gain the trust of a person and then ask them for money via a wire transfer.

In some cases, victims have been swindled out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Officials said you should never wire money to someone you've never met.
