NY woman in kidney donor case files complaint
WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) -- A Long Island woman claims she was fired after donating a kidney so her boss could move up the transplant waiting list.
In papers filed with the Human Rights commission, Debbie Stevens said her boss, Jackie Brucia, berated her when she went home sick three days after returning to her car dealership job. Stevens told the New York Post she didn't realize she'd be in so much pain following the August 2011 surgery.
She said she was demoted to a dealership 50 miles from her home. She says she was fired after her lawyers wrote a letter to the company, Atlantic Automotive Group.
Brucia, a controller for AAG, and the company didn't return calls for comment. Brucia's husband said Stevens' claims were "far from the truth."
