These pictures show the ravaged regions of New York and New Jersey before and after Superstorm Sandy struck the east coast.

Superstorm Sandy slammed the east coast on Oct. 29, causing extensive damage in New York and New Jersey, where winds hit the coast at 80 mph.

The estimated cost of damage from Sandy is up to $50 billion, making it the second most expensive storm in U.S. history, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Sandy killed more than 100 people in 10 states.

Just over a week after Sandy hit, 658,000 utility customers remained without electricity across the region, mostly in New York and New Jersey. The nor’easter added salt to the wounds of Sandy victims, increasing the number of those without power from the superstorm.
