Kidnapping victims comment on Ohio missing women
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WHDH) -- Some high-profile kidnapping victims and their families are talking about the rescue in Ohio after three women who disappeared in Cleveland a decade ago were found safe Monday.
Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped in June of 2002 from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was found almost a year later. Police arrested Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee for the kidnapping.
Smart’s father talked about the three women freed in Cleveland saying, “Heaven only knows what kind of nightmare they have lived for the past 10 years, but that this was a segment in their life and they have their entire lives in front of them.”
Jaycee Dugard was held captive for 18 years. She was kidnapped in 1991 when she was 11 years old in Lake Tahoe, Calif. A man and his wife were charged in that crime.
She released a statement about the Cleveland women, saying: “These individuals need the opportunity to heal and connect back into the world. This isn’t who they are. It is only what happened to them. The human spirit is incredibly resilient. More than ever this reaffirms we should never give up hope.”
