Family: Injured biker in SUV assault a devoted dad
NEW YORK (AP) -- The longtime girlfriend of a biker who was struck by an SUV during a bloody weekend confrontation with a throng of motorcyclists says he is a devoted family man.
Dayana Mejia cried during a press conference in New York City on Friday. Mejia says her partner, 32-year-old Edwin Mieses Jr., is an adoring father to the couple's two children.
Mejia says the people who participated in the motorcycle ride are "not thugs."
Mieses' attorney says he was trying to "calm people down" when the SUV hit him Sunday.
Video shows the SUV surrounded by dozens of helmeted riders. Driver Alexian Lien drove through the crowd and struck Mieses. Lien's wife says he feared for his family's safety and was trying to flee.
Mejia was referred to in media reports as Mieses' wife, but called him her partner Friday.
