Woman sets vending machine on fire
UNDATED (WHDH) -- A woman is facing charges after lighting a vending machine on fire when it ate her money and failed to dispense a soda.
Debra Johnson tried to dodge cameras in court. But authorities said the 43-year-old didn't dodge surveillance cameras when she showed off her pyrotechnic skills outside a grocery store.
"I don't want to be on camera. This is [expletive] ridiculous."
"ma'am, you do not need to be cursing in the courtroom."
Gilbert Crary couldn't believe what he saw when he showed up at work.
"She went and got a newspaper, lit it on fire, and stuffed it inside the machine,” he said.
Apparently Johnson was mad the machine took her money, without dispensing a soda. Video shows her taking her frustration out by kicking the machine.
She lit a fire, then grabbed a drink from another vending machine and walked away. Minutes later, flames shot out, melting all $35 worth of change and whatever else was left inside.
"What an idiot. You could've received your money back in about five or six hours,” said
Unlike the machine that took her money, Johnson didn't hold back during her first appearance, telling the judge she didn't need a lawyer.
"I’ll represent myself, 'cause I’m guilty. I don't need a lawyer to lie for me, cause I’m a tell you I done it."
Waving her right to an attorney and refusing to pay the 10-thousand-dollar bond, Johnson will get her chance to come clean again during her next court appearance.
