Man surprises girlfriend with roadside proposal
SOUTH MIAMI (WHDH) -- A man on a mission went above and beyond to pop the question. The man surprised his girlfriend while driving to brunch.
It started out like a typical Sunday for Wilfredo Alvarado and Yane Quevedo.
They've been together for years. She thought they were just going about their day. "I told her I was taking her to brunch," said Avecado.
Little did Yane know, Wilfredo was about to ask her the biggest question of her life.
The couple drove on the Palmetto Expressway when Wilfredo suddenly pulled over and acted like something was wrong with the car. "I didn't pop the hood, but I came around."
That's when in the middle of the bustling South Florida traffic, the couple's friends and family spelled out the big question. "Well I had two of my friends go over to the expressway over there on Bird and Coral Way," said Alvarado, "and I had them write out my proposal to my girlfriend with red cups."
Wilfredo strategically planned it all out and did several rehearsal runs with those involved. "I went yesterday and bought 1500 red and black cups," said Avecado.
"We got up early," said Dee Paul, "And got all the cups and mapped, do it eye-ball it, and keep going back and looking for it, fix it, you know make it look good."
Wilfredo caught Yane completely off guard. "I had no idea what was going on," said Quevedo.
The couple's friends and family stood along the expressway as it all unfolded, waiting for the big answer. "My friends were there," said Quevedo. "My family was there. They were there in a little corner hiding and then everybody ran."
And once she said "yes," road rangers joined the couple for their momentous event. "The road rangers came and kinda parked their cars so that we could take pictures there in front," said Alvarado.
They did make it to that brunch. The couple joined their family and friends for a Sunday meal turned celebration.
The couple has a 3-year-old daughter, and Yane is expecting another child with Wilfredo. They haven't set a wedding date yet.
