FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WHDH) -- Police are looking for a man who was caught on camera beating up another South Florida man.
The attack happened Sunday, April 15, at the Bahia Cabana, located at 3001 Harbor Drive.
Robert Werner can be seen relaxing at the beach-side hotel when the attacker, who was wearing a white baseball hat, just walked up to him and started throwing punches. "Somebody had turned around and said something to me. I don't quite recall what it was, however, I didn't want part of the conversation," he recalled during a Skype interview. "... I was attacked."
The brutality of the attack on Werner was so severe he had no idea what had happened once it ended. "I was filled with blood, filled with blood," he said. "When I first came to, I didn't even know what happened to me."
After the attack, Werner was left with black eyes and two teeth knocked out, which will cost him $6,000 to fix. "Did a lot more damage than knocking my front teeth out. I mean, I don't know what the extent is, I'm in New York right now. I came up to see a doctor here," Werner said. "My shoulder has been hurting, and I haven't been quite able to see out of my peripheral vision in my right eye."
Werner said he is traumatized by the attack. "I received about anywhere between five or six stitches above my eye. It's just the worst, most violating thing that has ever happened to me," he said.
Surveillance cameras gave investigators a clear look of the attacker, who preyed on Werner, but they still need the public's help. "What we're asking for is the help of the public here because the bottom line is this cave man-like machismo will not be tolerated in our community," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Travis Mandell. "We're hoping that someone else will recognize that and identify him and come forward."
Werner has temporary teeth now but said he cannot even look at himself in the mirror. "For anybody to attack you out of nowhere, you don't see it coming, you don't know what the heck is happening. To put their hands on you, I have to say I look forward to seeing this hoodlum in handcuffs," he said.
