HOLLYWOOD, Fl. (WHDH) -- An 11-year-old boy is a hero for staying cool under pressure.
He was home alone when people broke into his house, but he knew exactly what to do.
“Are you alone inside the house?” asked the 911 operator.
“Yes,” whispered 11-year-old Luis Gutierrez into the phone to a 911 operator. He was tucked underneath his bed alone Thursday evening.
“Is the person inside the house?”
“Yes, yes, ma'am.”
His dad left their Johnson Street home just 5 minutes earlier to grab dinner for the two of them.
“I was watching TV,” said Luis, “I went to get something to drink when I saw somebody throw a hammer like through a window.”
“That's when he called me,” said Luis’ father. “He said ‘Dad there's someone knocking on the front of our house very hard’, and i said do not open that door.
“Then a minute layer he goes, ‘Dad someone threw something. They broke the window.’ I said which window. He said the kitchen window. I said, ‘call 911.’”
He snatched up his dog Cookie and dove into a hiding spot in his bedroom and dialed.
“What are you doing?” asked the 911 operator.
“Hiding,” he’s answered.
“First,I thought it was two people but there were 3. They were yelling across the room. I couldn't really hear them. I had to whisper to the operator so I wouldn't get caught.”
While 11-year-old Gutierrez hid under his bed, out of sight and out of hearing range, three teens ransacked the house. They snagged gold jewelry and tore up two rooms, even taking his new fifth grade graduation awards.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez’s father also called the cops as he drove home.
“I felt like I was driving from here to Orlando. I mean, when the operator told me that he was on the other line with another operator, that's when she told me to calm down.”
“Are the cops here?” Gutierrez asked the 911 operator.
“They are outside. I want you to stay on the phone.”
After six minutes or so, officers tactfully crept up to the house and tapped on child's bedroom window.
“I jumped up and they caught me,” said Gutierrez.
Police officers safely lifted the boy out of his own bedroom window. His father was waiting outside.
He said he was happier to see his son than he's ever been before in his life.
Police also arrested all three teenager who is broke into house. They recovered the jewelry they attempted to steal.
The boy’s father said he will never, ever leave his son home alone again.
