Witnesses describe crash of Asiana Airliner
SAN FRANCISCO (WHDH) -- As Asiana Flight 214 made its final approach into San Francisco's Airport, witnesses couldn't believe what they saw.
“The tail clipped the runway, I think that’s when the tail broke off...and it kind of cartwheeled down the runway… there were flames and smoke, just billowing,” said witness Stephanie Turner.
Turner saw the plane coming in and knew something wasn’t right. It was a scary sight, as people on the ground watched it happen and felt helpless.
“I didn't see when it actually hit the ground. I think that's the boom that I heard. I hear a boom, I paused a second, turned around looked out the window then I saw it tumbling,” said witness Ralph Narcisco.
“I saw that it looked normal at first. It was taking the same angle that they always come in like this, the wheels were down, and then I knew something was wrong...the wheels were too low too soon...the whole thing just collapsed immediately, it never really had a chance,” another witness said.
Those who were on other planes waiting to take off looked out and saw the crash.
"A lot of the windows in our plane were closed and there were not a lot of witnesses. So I just happened to be the one that opened the window and looking outside and when I was looking outside, it all happened so suddenly. So I see a lot of the passengers in my cabin are actually calm and the pilot and all the -- the pilot is trying to figure out how to get us out from the plane and, yes, and we're just like waiting here in the plane to see what we can do to get back to the gate," said one witness who saw the crash out her window. "So what happened was when it was about the land the tires flipped a little bit and it rocked back and the tail came off and when it rocked back a lot of the parts from the plane came off and shattered everywhere on the runway and after it rocked back, it rocked and it seemed that the front part of the plane is on the ground sliding all the way through the runway," the witness said.
