Young CA girls hospitalized for rare type of skin burn
HANFORD, Calif. (WHDH) -- Doctors are warning people to be aware of a rare type of skin burn that’s caused by the combination of limes and sunlight.
Five girls in California developed it in August. They ended up getting severe blisters and second-degree burns.
The condition is called ‘phytophotodermatitis’ - ‘margarita dermatits’ for short.
The condition is caused by lime juice getting on skin, making it more sensitive to sunlight when exposed.
The girls were hospitalized for two weeks and told to stay indoors for six months - if not longer.
