Graduated from Spring (TX) High School...Was named USA Today's High School Pitcher of the Year as a senior in 1999 after going 10-1 with a 0.46 ERA...Selected as the Texas 5-A Player of the Year as both a junior and a senior...Was 13-2 with a 0.39 ERA his junior year...Tabbed as the top high school prospect in the country by Baseball America...Became the 1st high school pitcher to be selected in the first round by the Marlins when he was the 2nd overall pick in 1999...Was the 1st high school right-hander to be selected as high as No. 2 in the draft since Montreal took Bill Gullickson with the 2nd pick in 1977.
