Former triple jump champ Olsson retires
STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Former Olympic triple jump champion Christian Olsson is retiring because of injury problems.
The 32-year-old Swede told Swedish news agency TT on Monday that he is retiring after problems with his right foot forced him to abandon a training camp in San Diego. Olsson had hoped to compete in the London Olympics.
Olsson dominated the event for a few years, winning indoor and outdoor world titles in 2003 and another indoor world title in 2004.
But he was plagued by injuries after winning the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics with a personal record of 58 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
Olsson was forced to pull out of the Beijing Games four years ago and also missed the world championships in 2007 and 2009. He made a comeback last year, placing sixth at the worlds.
