FITCHBURG, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Fitchburg High School football player is recovering in the hospital after he broke his neck during a game Friday night.
High school senior Trey Mahone sustained the injury during a hard hit on the field. Mahoney went in for a tackle and his teammate accidentally kicked him, snapping Mahone's neck back.
Mahone was able to walk off the field after being hit, but then reportedly told his coach that he couldn’t see.
Mahone was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
7News was told it was a clean break and that Mahone is expected to make a full recovery.
Mahone tweeted, “Thanks for everyone’s support. I broke my neck, but God willingly should be walking again.” In another tweet, Mahone said, "I'm so blessed. One more play I wouldn't be alive. Wasn't supposed to be able to walk off the field but I did. Thank God. #Blessed."
A hospital spokesperson told 7News Monday that Mahone was in good condition.
