Thornton: Winning the Cup best moment of my life
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Like the Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks have also recently won a Stanley Cup. Chicago won it in 2010, the year before the Bruins.
It’s a match-up true hockey fans love -- two Original Six teams loaded with players who already have their names on the Stanley Cup.
Few have experienced hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup above their heads, but those who have still have trouble describing what it’s like.
“It’s tough to put into words how it feels. The first time I won it in Anaheim was the greatest day of my life and the second time I won it here (in Boston) is equally as good,” said Bruins forward Shawn Thornton.
Hoisting hockey’s Holy Grail can inspire some candid comments -- Thornton said the memory of winning the Stanley Cup is above the memory of getting married.
“Yeah, she knows that, too. She accepts it...Listen, every Canadian kid growing up dreaming about winning the Stanley Cup. Not many little boys grow up dreaming about their wedding day,” said Thornton, with a laugh.
“I’m thinking he’s a brave man to say that. Anybody who says the Stanley Cup is better than their wedding day we’ll have to see after the finals whether they’re still married or not, right?” said Bruins coach Claude Julien, with a laugh.
Jokes aside, playing for the Cup is always something to treasure and it’s extra special since the current Bruins team is there for a second time.
“It’s a feeling that you really can’t describe and just knowing the guys that much more and having played together for a few years now, it’s an incredible feeling,” said Bruins forward Brad Marchand.
The Blackhawks host the Bruins for Game 1 Wednesday night. The game will be televised on 7NBC.
