History of the Bruins player-of-the-game jacket
BOSTON (WHDH) -- We’re used to seeing Andrew Ference defending the Bruins goal, keeping pucks away from Tuukka Rask and keeping the Blackhawks from scoring. But he also learned a little bit about what it’s like to defend our country. He got a firsthand look at how some of the men who defend the United States train.
The Rangers, an army team who he trained with, awarded Ference with a jacket with a special Rangers tag. It’s an honor that very few people ever earn.
Staff sergeant Lucas Carr had the jacket specially made for Ference.
“We had a Boston Bruins name tag put on the jacket and that’s over the heart,” said Carr.
But Ference took it a step further and gave the jacket to the team. It now drapes the shoulders of the player teammates feel was the best player during a given game.
“They view themselves as a team and they’re crazy, they’re leaders. So we just want to have some fun but also give it to a guy that’s willing to go to battle for the guys and kind of lead the way,” said Ference.
Carr said this is their time, they have the stage.
“You can look at it as you’re invincible for that time of your life, but everybody else around you now is in good company and you’re invincible with them. And that’s what makes you the best of the best,,” he said.
The relationship between the Rangers and the Bruins runs deep. As part of what they called “Operation Black and Gold,” the Rangers took a Bruins flag around the globe. It now hangs in the Bruins locker room.
Former Bruin Lyndon Byers was with Ference at Fort Benning and earned a jacket as well.
“I actually have a Ranger tag, which is incredibly, incredibly special,” said Byers.
He said it’s an honor that has no comparison and it’s a silent tribute to his team and the peope who defend our country.
“They’re just every day guys. They’re like Lucas Carr. They walk amongst us and they don’t ask for anything,” said Byers.
David Krejci was the first Bruins player to wear the jacket this post season. He earned it after Game 1 against Toronto. Since then he has earned the jacket two more times. Patrice Bergeron has also earned it twice.
