BOSTON (WHDH) -- Official plans for the movie about former Bruins star Derek Sanderson were formally announced Wednesday.

Actor and producer Edward Burns will star in and produce "Turk," a movie about the larger than life member of the "Big Bad Bruins" of the 1970's who assisted on Bobby Orr's high flying Stanley Cup winning goal in 1970.

“I’ve seen the movie. I’ve known Derek a long time and I’ve seen his ups and I’ve seen his downs and it is a great story,” Orr said.

“Well, I never thought it would ever happen. I didn’t think I’d live this long. But now that I have and…it’s kind of eerie. It’s kind of like…weird,” Sanderson said.

The film will show how Turk became one of the most sought after bachelors in America, and then how his wild ways with drugs and alcohol nearly killed him. But thanks to his teammate Bobby Orr -- he survived and flourished.

“I never intended any of it to happen. It just will take place if you do not protect yourself. If you start making stupid, silly decisions, you’ll be in trouble -- fast,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson, Orr, and Burns discussed the movie at the W Hotel in Boston Wednesday night.

“First of all, a great redemption story. A father, son story, and most importantly, a look at a real friendship that withstood a lot of tough times,” Burns said.
