UNDATED (WHDH) -- Vermont native Andrew Wheating placed third in the 1,500-meter men's final Sunday, earning him a spot on the U.S. Olympic track team.

In an interview after the race, the runner says the crowd really helped him push through for the last lap.

“It’s like having 20,000 friends and family hooting and hollering. I developed a serious connection to this entire stadium. Coming down that home stretch, I can feel it as much as I’m showing it,” said Andrew Wheating.

It will be Wheating's second trip to the Olympics. His skill and long stride have been instrumental in making him one of America’s top middle distance runners.
